Barcelona Ciència book launch

Barcelona City Council celebrated 15 years of scientific policies with the publication of the book Barcelona Ciència. We were thrilled to take part as editors alongside Petit Comitè, the company commissioned to design and coordinate the book’s publication. The Barcelona Ciència programme, which has been key in promoting links between scientific knowledge and Barcelona citizens, leads a range of initiatives, including the Science Festival (Festa de la Ciència), Escolab, and many more.

To prepare the book’s contents, we started out with a series of texts by different authors, internal documents, institutional websites and reports, as well as further information provided by Barcelona City Council. The challenge was to turn all the materials into a narrative covering the history of the programme, from its launch in 2007 to the present day.

To tackle this task, we started with the book’s structure, dividing it into chapters, sub-chapters, information tables and infographics. Our goal was to show Barcelona’s role as a platform for science, and the city’s position as an active force for scientific development. We highlighted the people who move to Barcelona to work in science, professionals who work in institutions that support research, and citizens who take part in scientific projects.

We were in constant conversation with Petit Comitè throughout the process, in order to guarantee that the content and design complemented and enhanced each other.

The result is a cohesive book with concise, easy-to-read content and a dynamic, modern and fresh design. The narrative gives a great perspective on the work carried out over the past fifteen years, and how these successes are reflected in the Barcelona Ciència programme.

Despite a complex start, we are pleased with how agile and efficient the work process was. From the very beginning, we established a positive working relationship with staff at Barcelona City Council staff and Petit Comitè, and we worked together to produce a result we can all be very proud of.
