Communicating to Transform: How We Promoted the New Edition of the Daniel Carasso Fellowship
The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation once again placed their trust in us—this time, to launch the latest call for their postdoctoral fellowship programme. The goal? To spread the word among researchers driving the transformation of the food system. Here’s how we designed and implemented the communication strategy for the 3rd edition of the Daniel Carasso Fellowship.
After working with the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation on the conceptualisation and launch of the Comunidad SABE, they came to us in December 2024 with a new project: to design the communication strategy for the launch of the 3rd edition of the Daniel Carasso Fellowship. This programme funds postdoctoral contracts focused on transforming the food system towards healthier and more sustainable models.
In this edition, the Foundation offered three grants of €160,000 each, covering both salary and research activities over two years. The selected fellows also join Comunidad SABE —an interdisciplinary network that brings together science, social commitment, and sustainability.
The brief was clear. On the one hand, to broaden the thematic diversity of applicants and attract researchers advancing the food transition from fields such as agronomy, marine sciences, biology, and food science to others like economics, politics, sociology, and even the arts. On the other hand, to strengthen the Foundation’s position as a leading promoter of research into sustainable food systems.
We set to work. The first step was to update the campaign’s visual identity to reflect its multidisciplinary character. Our aim was for anyone conducting research in sustainable food—regardless of their field—to feel represented and encouraged to apply. That’s why we created a series of audiovisual pieces that captured this systemic vision.
But who better to encourage new applicants than the previous Daniel Carasso Fellows themselves? We invited them to share their experiences and what motivated them to apply in their respective editions.
With everything in place… it was time to spread the word! We designed a comprehensive, multi-channel communication strategy. We reached out directly and personally to research centres, universities, and researchers at both national and international levels to inform them about the call and encourage them to apply.
We also managed the activation of the Foundation’s digital channels: its website, email campaigns, organic and paid social media content, Google Ads, and specialist platforms. Additionally, we drafted the press release and media kit and reached out to journalists and media outlets.
One Step Closer to Meeting the New Daniel Carasso Fellows
The 3rd call for the Daniel Carasso Fellowship closed on March 20, and the results couldn’t have been more encouraging. This year saw a total of 76 applications—the highest number across all three editions—and a significant increase in the thematic diversity of submissions. Notably, applications from the social sciences grew from just one in the previous edition to 17 this year, making it the second most represented discipline.
In recent months, we’ve also supported the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation throughout the selection process to identify the three new Daniel Carasso Fellows who have now joined Comunidad SABE.
Strategic Support for a Growing Community
“Working with Ubik Media is like having a trusted ally who’s always one step ahead. Thank you for your warmth, sensitivity, and strategic vision. Connecting science and social transformation isn’t easy, but with you, communicating for change becomes a reality,” said Pilar Martínez, Programme Manager for Sustainable Food at the Foundation.
As for us, we’re especially excited to see this community we helped build continue to grow, and to keep working with them to connect their research with other organisations and projects that are striving to transform the food system in Spain.
